Language
The official course language is German. At least a fluent understanding of German is therefore required. However, most of the professors/lecturers speak and understand English.
Choice of the Field of Excellence
The Master of Arts in Design offers five Fields of Excellence as places of in-depth engagement with design. You will complete the Master study in one Field of Excellence. This allows a personalised profile of study according to your individual strengths and interest. Please choose your Field of Excellence and, if necessary, an additional option. Your application will be checked by the eligible experts.
Letter of motivation and Master project idea
Provide a convincing outline of your motivation for the Master study as well as a pathway-specific, research-oriented project idea on a maximum of 2 A4 pages. The project should indicate your interest, a situational analysis and personal approach. If necessary, you can provide further documentation to your application. The submitted project idea can but does not have to be part of your future Master study.
Letter of motivation for candidates with no design training
If you have no explicit prior design training (education or practice), describe your activities until now and in particular your personal strengths and interest as well as your motivation for the Master of Arts in Design in a maximum of two A4 pages. We refer to the description of the Field of Excellence.
List of projects and references
Add a list of design projects or projects from previous activities in which you played a substantial part. These could include:
- projects from any previous studies
- projects from your design practice as employee or self-employed
- research projects
- theory-oriented projects
Please illustrate your projects, if possible.
Letter of Recommendation
Please attach at least 2 letters of recommendation for the Master of Arts in Design at the ZHdK. They should be from an appropriate institution/person (e.g. employer, Higher Education, or similar).
