Fields of Excellence
The central feature of the Master’s degree in Design is the division into a Major and Minor study. The Major study is conducted in one of the five «Fields of Excellence» providing in-depth specialisation in professional areas.
In the Field of Excellence «Event» commercial events, media interactions and artistic interventions are developed and implemented. The programme comprises critical analysis of events and reflection on the notion of an “event”, historical research, three-dimensional storytelling and the design, as well as the conception of trend and future-orientated scenarios.
The Field of Excellence «Interaction» specialises in the training of versatile experts in the area of interaction and gaming. In the Master’s study you will have the opportunity to test design-oriented methods, strategies and processes for the development of individual projects in one of the proposed research areas.
In the Field of Excellence «Communication» three key methodologies in graphicvisual and communicative design are studied in more depth: the media transformation of topics and narratives through the editorial creation of relations between image and text, vision and concept, design aesthetics and production (Editorial Design); the strategic design of image and sign systems for orientation and identification in the context of Information and Corporate Design (Visual Systems); the visual communication of facts, relations, and complex information of visualising and explaining knowledge (Knowledge Visualisation and Scientific Illustration)
The Field of Excellence «Products» focus on Mobility and Sports, and addresses two future-oriented design topics with open development opportunities. Both topics combine emotional, social, technological and economic requirements with the design challenge of innovation in research, and touch on social trends and developments, taking their impact into consideration. A special emphasis is placed on tourism, which serves as a link between them and plays a crucial economic role for Switzerland.
In the Field of Excellence «Trends» students acquire the ability to develop strategic design concepts. Due to their visionary character, strategic design concepts are to a large extent based on the early anticipation and articulation of future developments in a cultural and socio-economic design, and innovation context. At the same time, this kind of concept is characterised by a high level of compatibility with the strategic aims of the company and the future-use requirements of the market.
