«Game Design»*

Head: René Bauer | Senior Research Associate: Dr. Mela Kocher

Games are special, (mostly intrinsic) motivational rules systems, developed and designed by game designers using motivation design. The specialization in Game Design offers students various options to set their own thematic priorities. Students develop concepts, experiments, prototypes and finished games, located at the intersection between real and/or virtual worlds. The didactic dissemination of methodical, conceptual, and technological competencies equips graduates to further refine the state of the art, whether working alone or in collaboration with others: they develop innovative game mechanics or game plays, extend traditional game areas, generate technologies, advance game culture or find relevant solutions for societal problems.

In their Master projects, students research and realize games in the most diverse areas and using the most varied technologies. They create games ranging from the most complex digital productions to analog board games. In doing so, they explore special thematic areas, such as “Serious Games”, which can be used in therapeutic or political contexts. They create Ludic Game Art, collaborative virtual worlds or Urban Games. Working with their lecturers they develop and apply their knowledge in game mechanics, game plots, technology and the areas of application of video- or analog games.
