Boss Fights in Role Play Games — A Reterritorialization of Digital Game Elements into Analogue Games
How can a strategic videogame boss fight be reterritorialized in a board game?
The aim of this Master thesis is to research the reterritorialization of digital game design into analogue game design. This will be shown using the example of strategic boss fights in RPGs transferred into the medium of a board game. For this purpose, the term «boss design» will be described and defined in the theoretical part of this thesis. In addition, the differences between video games and board games are shown.
In the empirical part of the thesis, these findings are used to analyze the structure and digital game elements of boss fights, using a qualitative content analysis. In a next step, those digital game elements are reterritorialized into analogue game elements, based on a category system developed in the theoretical part of the thesis. The intention is to create a board game prototype of a boss fight, which will be developed in an iterative way throughout the whole Master thesis.
This Master thesis is aimed at game design students and teachers, and further at people who are particularly interested in the transfer of digital media into analogue board games.
