Visual narratives of digital use.
Digital Patina is theory, experiment, and interface all in one. Confounding the view that data has no aesthetic value, Digital Patina transfers the logic of analogue marks or traces to a digital context. A ‘digital patina’ is created by endowing digital data with analogue forms of wear, erosion, and ageing. The ‘patina’ offers an intuitive description of the mechanisms for collecting user data and creates a new way of communicating them. More than an end in itself, the aesthetic here serves a function. Digital Patina creates visual narratives of digital usage.
The aim is to inculcate users with a sense of responsibility towards their own data. Users observe and influence their own data trails, giving rise to a new data culture.
