Semiotics of Security — Extents and ambivalences of the era of fear

How does the trend towards an increased need for security materialise in our society and how can we encourage reflection?

Our world seems dangerous to many, although objectively a high degree of security prevails. The feeling of insecurity is fed by developments such as digital change, continuous migration movements and the increasing fictionalisation and dramatisation of events in media and politics. The resulting density of complexity and speed overstrain, the feeling of fear and powerlessness takes on a life of its own and the call for "more security" becomes ever louder. The web shop »24/7 InSecurity«, created as part of the Master’s project, offers a selection of the seemingly endless range of products and services for security. The absurd and ambivalent assortment makes a plaidoyer for greater tolerance of ambiguity, and for recognition of its positive aspects, in order to put an end to continuous alarmism.
