Unpleasant enemies. Established and new forms of enemy coding in video games.
Violence in video games is usually directed against virtual enemies, whether controlled by the computer or by other people. In this work, enemies controlled by the computer are examined in more detail. How do we as players recognize what is hostile to us?
The research on this question is based on analyses of video games, findings from media and violence research and surveys among students. The representation of enemies is divided into three main categories: There are enemy codes that concern the visual, the auditory and the behavior. These codes occur in patterns, which in turn can be summarized in impulsive and continuous enemy patterns. In the resulting game prototype Neon Munera, the insights gained are applied.
