Piano Button

How is the interactive possibility space shaped by the form and function of the interface?

Buttons, Triggers, Joysticks, Touchpads and Motion Sensors: The interfaces with which we translate our physical abilities into the virtual world are made up out of these components, and we use them to play games. After learning to use them we pay them no more attention. But through them there is only so many game mechanics that can be created to test our skills.

The thesis «Piano Button» looks at how the design and functionality of an interface shapes the possible game mechanics. And the controller which was constructed for it, uses a velocity sensitive Piano Button to showcase this interrelation. In three Minigames «Flipper Golf», «Ketchup Bitte» and «Sprinkler» the players are able to experience this new form of control for themselves.
