Un-Breaking the Rules
Absolute chaos or perfect order – or something in between? In the public perception, graphic design is usually not associated with the factor of chance. This research investigates how controlled randomness can also be used in the working process of designers. For this purpose, the principle of serendipity in the creative process of artists and designers is examined and tested based on three design strategies through several experiments. In the experimentation process, the combination of digital media and analogue production – with their very different and yet correlated spectrum of randomness – offers the possibility of mapping the factors affecting the final output/work and thus demonstrates the potential of serendipity.
