Virtual Real Rooms – Immersion Mechanics in Overlaid VR Spaces

Game: «Spacecraft – New Way Home»

How can a real-world apartment become part of the virtual space, and which immersion mechanics are necessary in order to motivate the players as effectively as possible to play together?

Today’s VR games try to transport us to limitless worlds with a huge number of possibilities for interaction. Our body is becoming increasingly important as a controller in this context. However, when players enter the virtual space, they tend to lose touch with their physical environment. These virtual spaces are generally too vast for our real play areas.
This thesis, in conjunction with the game «Spacecraft», reveals the potential of our own home as a game area through the lens of VR goggles. It shows the influence of this overlaid game area on the game mechanics and how to deal with the limitations of the atomic space. Such overlaid games are intended to bring back the communal play experience that we know from our childhood.
