Who Needs a Skirt? Bring Me the Alpenstock!
A creative exploration of the motif of the journey in archival documents of female migratory bird participants.
The founding of the Wandervogel-Bund in 1901 initiated a youth movement that reached far beyond its birthplace of Berlin-Steglitz. Teenagers organized themselves to go on hikes in nature and experienced a feeling of freedom outside of their restrictive and conservative homes. Unlike its German counterpart, the Swiss Wandervogel-Bund accepted girls to join the association as early as its inception. The self-organized hikes, often lasting over multiple days, enabled young girls to free themselves from societal and parental confinement and created an environment in which they could actively participate, exchange ideas and grow further.
The aim of this project is to decipher motives of travel through an editorial format based on archival documents of former female Wandervogel-members.
